INTRODUCTION
THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY IN TURKEY AFTER THE SECOND WORLD WAR
Turkey stayed neutral for most of the Second World War, but nonetheless went through difficulties brought on by the conflict. Among the measures taken to prevent these difficulties was the passing of the National Preservation Act. Governments were entrusted with the power to confiscate private businesses, determine minimum prices for imports and exports, and to distribute basic goods based on a carnet system. Two governmental agencies, the Trade Office and the Supplies Under-secretariat were set up to increase the government’s control over domestic and foreign trade. As a result, there was cheap food and clothing for soldiers, and cheap bread and coal for city dwellers during the first years of the Second World War. In later years, however, this tight control was first relaxed, and then removed altogether.
